#RUCAPS22 From body dysmorphia to beauty standards to Instagram likes, this podcast is going to get a little too truthful with how Social Media can affect your self image, especially as a women.

With such a heavy topic of mental health struggles in young women, the format I'd like to tackle with this project is a podcast. I have a lot of personal experience with growing up on social media at a young age and can definitely attest to the fact that it does affect the way I view myself.

I wouldn't know how else to convey these feelings myself and other women my age experience other than a conversation. That conversation would translate well to a podcast episode which is why I would like to chose that format. I love commentary videos/podcasts, and I enjoy exploring topics regarding women and the constantly changing, yet overbearing beauty ideals. I believe this subject will not only excite me but also be one that I enjoy learning about. I hope other women or men find this subject as interesting and relatable as I do
The topic I want to research and address is specifically how women's mental health is affected by social media's beauty standards and norms. It's normal to edit you photos to the point where you are unrecognizable and post them nowadays. It's also normal to lie about plastic surgery procedures as a celebrity. These portrayals of beauty have such a negative affect on the mental health of many young women who believe that they are ugly and undesirable if they don't fit a certain mold.
Right now I would say the beauty standard is having European features, a small waist, flat stomach, big breasts and a bit butt. Now naturally, not many women can achieve this at all, but of course the popularized BBL surgery has perpetuated this beauty standard. These are all topics I'd like to get into as well as the male gaze on social media, and how that plays into mental health for women as well. By mental health, I am envisioning discussing research, and possibly speaking with guests about how social media ingrained diet culture and a very specific beauty standard among young women. My guests would be women my age who were on social media, specifically Instagram, at a young age (12-14). I would like to touch on the rise in certain eating disorders as well as ED culture on social media in this episode. I am also envisioning that my focus will be on digital natives as we had different experiences online than adults did at the time. This includes Millennials and GenZ. I'd like to explore this research on Rutgers Library since this is subject I've never looked into using that source, and I'm really looking forward to producing this script and podcast.
