Living in a digital society certainly has its pros and cons. In this blog post, we're going to dive into the challenges of digital communication, but also all of the opportunities it presents us with.
There are various challenging aspects of communicating digitally. One issue is the miscommunications that occur without face-to-face communication. With remote work becoming the new norm, it is essential to be fluent in digital communication no matter what profession you are in. Most digital miscommunication happens because we don’t have access to the non-verbal cues, including tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions, that give us valuable emotional context when we’re discussing in person. It is important to consider the different ways a message can be delivered with factors like tone, and body language present. The sender of a message may not be as digitally literate as the receiver. A sender may not think twice about sentence structure, while the receiver may analyze a passive aggressive tone in the message when that is not the intention. Another challenge includes the absolute necessity of Internet connection. If you are working remotely and your power goes out and you lose wifi, you can miss out on hours of work that needs to get done. It's frustrating that we rely so heavily on Wifi connection, especially when it malfunctioning can be out of your control.

While there are downsides to digital communication, the opportunities it presents definitely make it worthwhile. From a marketing perspective, digital communication allows for a better record of measurable results. If you run a digital campaign, you can record number of views, downloads, likes, website visits, conversions, traffic searches and various other metrics that will allow you to understand what is working and what's not, as well as what your audience enjoys. Another benefit of digital communication is how immediate it is. Emails and other forms of messages are delivered as soon as they are sent, eliminating waiting time and allowing communication to happen much quicker than in previous years.
I hope you enjoyed this weeks post discussing the pros and cons of digital communication. Don't forget to check back in next week as I continue to examine the ins and outs of digital life!
